What is Counselling & How Can It Help?

  • Gain clarity on emotional struggles

  • Improve relationships and communication

  • Build self-confidence and self-awareness

  • Navigate significant life changes, such as bereavement or career shifts

How to Choose the Right Counsellor in Guildford

Finding a counsellor who aligns with your needs is crucial. Consider the following factors:

1. Qualifications & Accreditation

Ensure the counsellor is qualified and registered with a professional body. I am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), adhering to their professional standards and code of ethics.

2. Therapeutic Approach

Understanding the counsellor's therapeutic approach can help determine compatibility. I practice Psychotherapeutic Counselling (Psychodynamic), focusing on how past experiences influence current thoughts, feelings, and relationships. This approach is beneficial for those seeking deeper self-understanding, and insight into recurring themes or patterns in their lives. It is through this increased level of self-awareness, coupled with the quality of the therapeutic relationship with the therapist, that healing and transformative change become possible.

Other approaches include:

  • Person-Centred Therapy – Rooted in the belief that individuals strive to reach their full potential, and emphasises the client's experience and self-discovery. The therapist acts as a facilitator, providing a safe, non-judgemental space to explore emotions.

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy - A structured, goal-oriented therapy that helps individuals identify and change unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors.

  • Mindfulness-Based Approaches – Use mindfulness practices, like meditation and awareness exercises, to help individuals manage stress, pain, and other mental health conditions, promoting a non-judgmental approach to thoughts and feelings.

3. Location & Availability

Consider the convenience of the counsellor's location and their availability. Tamara B Counselling is based in Guildford, offering a comfortable and private setting for in-person sessions. Online sessions are also available if appropriate, and flexible appointment times are offered to accommodate your schedule.

4. Cost & Affordability

Counselling is an investment in your well-being. At Tamara B Counselling, sessions are priced at £60. Recognising that affordability can be a concern, I also dedicate time to voluntary counselling work, reflecting my commitment to accessible support for everyone.

What to Expect in Your First Therapy Session

Your initial counselling session is an opportunity to discuss your reasons for seeking support and establish how we can work together. During this session, we will:

  • Explore your background and any current challenges

  • Discuss your expectations for therapy

  • Establish initial goals or areas of focus

  • Answer any questions you may have about the process

This session also allows you to assess whether my approach aligns with your needs, ensuring a comfortable and supportive therapeutic relationship.

Frequently Asked Questions About Counselling

Will Therapy Work for Me? Counselling is a personal journey, and its effectiveness depends on various factors, including the level of commitment to the counselling process and the client-therapist relationship. At Tamara B Counselling, I strive to create a non-judgemental and empathetic environment, fostering a strong therapeutic alliance to support your progress.

How Long Does Counselling Take? The duration of counselling varies based on individual needs and goals. Some clients find short-term counselling (6–12 sessions) beneficial for a specific concern, while others prefer longer-term therapy for deeper self-exploration. We can discuss your preferences and tailor the counselling accordingly.

Is Counselling Confidential? Confidentiality is a cornerstone of counselling. All sessions at Tamara B Counselling are conducted with strict confidentiality, ensuring a safe space for you to share openly. Exceptions to confidentiality occur only if there is a risk of harm to yourself or others, in line with ethical guidelines.

Do I Need a Referral to Start Counselling? No, you do not need a referral. You can book a session directly by reaching out by completing the client enquiry form on the homepage.

What If I’m Not Sure Counselling is Right for Me? If you’re unsure, I offer an initial 20 minute conversation where we can discuss your concerns and determine if counselling is the right fit for you.

In-Person or Online Counselling

Tamara B Counselling currently offers in-person and online counselling sessions. In-person sessions offer a dedicated space for you to engage in therapy, while online counselling is offered via Google Meet. Counselling sessions, whether in-person or online, take place on a mutually agreed day, at the same time each week for 50 minutes.

Online counselling is a different experience compared with in-person counselling. These differences include the lack of visual and audio cues. As well, online counselling services may not be suitable for everyone, including individuals experiencing crisis situations or severe mental health symptoms.

If you would like online counselling, your suitability will be discussed at your initial consultation. If suitable, then this will be reviewed on an on-going basis to ensure your well-being and safety.
